"BY THE FOOTSTEPS OF SILVER MINERS ON THE SILK ROAD"
Project «Development of mountain regions of the Republic Tajikistan through tourism» Travel company LLC Javohirtour, in partnership with USAID's Future Growth Initiative, started the development of four new tourist routes by regions with weak economic indicators. The main goal of the project is to create jobs for the local communities by involving them in tourism services. One of the main criteria to select the location for the future route was to choose the remote areas with rich historical, cultural and natural attractions, but rare visited and little known from the point of tourism. The area we choose for our first route was the ancient city of miners in Bozordara valley, called Samarqandak, located in 4000 m elevation of Eastern Pamir Mountains. The ruins of this ancient city, nowadays serves as the silent witnesses of once developed trading cities along the ancient Silk Road. Among the ruins, the archeologists found a caravanserai, a building plots with residential buildings (more than 80 of them), and ancient cemetery with over 500 graves. The living quarters of ancient city were equipped with sufas and hearths. Among the public buildings, the ruins of the administrative complex, Fire Temple, a bath with heating system type of a kan (under the floor) have been preserved. According to Bubnova (an archeology who found the miners city) research around 1200 - 1500 people lived in the city at the in the midst of civilization. The city appeared in the 11th century in the Eastern Pamirs, during the so-called "silver crisis" when silver deposits of Pamirs began to be intensively used. To control the workers and protect the silver required huge human efforts, so gradually people built a big city called Samarqandak, which means a little Samarqand. Little by little, the city become a big trading center along the Silk Road, famous by the name Bozordara. (the valley of markets). The second place we add to this route, was a village located in Ishkashim district of Wakhan valley called Ryn. This village differs from the other villages of Tajikistan by its unique language. The language used by the habitants of Ryn is known as a pearl in the world of linguistics – only the people of Ryn and nowhere else in the world use this language. This small village has it own language, which survived through the centuries and still alive. This ancient language has an important place in the system of Indo-European languages and some efforts have been made by UNESCO to preserve it. Currently, this Ryni language is spoken by the people of only two villages on the right bank of Pyanj River — the village of Ryn (1000 speakers) and Sumjin (360 speakers) in Tajikistan. Residents of the of Ryn village of Gorna-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, as the bulk of the speakers of this language, are doing their best to develop and preserve this language as one of the most important assets of their ancestors. Based on these interesting facts, we decided to name the route "By the footsteps of the Silk Road Miners" and we assure you that this is like a drop in the ocean among all the wonders of Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, more famous to outsiders as High Pamirs. We invite you to explore it yourself during your trips to Tajikistan. TOURS ON THE GREAT SILK ROAD
"The Great Silk Road" - words that cause us to associate with caravans filled with exotic goods, which, bypassing the sultry deserts, mountain cliffs, being exposed to dangers, for several months, stubbornly moved from the flourishing and rich cities of the Mediterranean, the Middle East through the Central Asia to the mysterious "people of silk", as the Chinese were called in antiquity. Was there such a road in reality and how did it go, or were there several equivalent paths, or maybe the Great Silk Road is a collective name symbolizing the eternal mutual interest of the West in the East and vice versa? The Great Silk Road played an outstanding role in the transfer of material and cultural values, linking together the peculiar and unique civilizations of the Near, Middle and Far East, Central Asia. The very name "The Great Silk Road" in relation to this international route was first applied in 1877 by the German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen. The history of the Great Silk Road testifies to the flourishing of civilizations. Often, war chariots rushed along the roads beaten by peaceful merchants, and the clatter of hooves, the clanking of weapons replaced the measured sounds of a bell on a camel's neck. Cities perished, peoples and religions left the historical arena, old paths and caravanserais were filled with sand, but they were replaced by new arteries, along the northern steppe routes or along the southern high-mountain routes. The Great Silk Road has its own prehistory, going back to the oldest historical layers to the III-II millennium BC, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds discovered many thousands of kilometers from the place of their production. The first way - "Sogdian" Route: "Kokand - Isfara - Kanibadam - Khojent - Ura-Tyube - Bunjinat (Shahristan) - Varzminor (Aini) - Penjikent - Zeravshan - Anzob - Dushanbe" Our route starts from the western end of the Fergana Valley, which the Chinese called Davan. From here the famous "heavenly" horses were delivered to the western and eastern countries. From the Fergana city of Chust, the traditional black-and-white skullcap of Chust spread widely throughout Central Asia. A whole chain of cities - Kashgar, Osh, Andijan, Fergana, Kokand - lead this segment of the way to Isfara, buried in greenery of apricot orchards. Isfara is mentioned in Babur's memoirs (15th century) as a city. The mountainous district of Isfara was inhabited by people back in the Stone Age. In the 1st millennium BC, Iranian-speaking nomads lived here - the Saks, who left numerous burial mounds and burial grounds. There are also many fortified mountain castles built in the 4th-7th centuries. ad. One of the earliest castles, Kalai Zumradshokh, was located on the territory of the current Zumrad sanatorium. In Isfara and in the villages adjacent to it, many monuments of archeology, architecture and art have been preserved. One of the famous architectural monuments is located in the village of Navgilem. This is a mosque-madrasah of Abdullakhan, built by order of Sheibanid Abdulkhan II, who ruled in 1583-1598. The time of its construction is noted in the chronogram corresponding to 1585-1586 years. In 1909, in the center of the eastern part of the courtyard, a certain Said Alibay built a high minaret. To the south of Isfara, in the village of Chorku, surrounded by late buildings, there is the Khazrati Shokh mazar, the only surviving wooden mausoleum of the 10th-11th centuries. The ancient mausoleum is located inside a late adobe building, like a pearl in a shell, and has seven columns, a frieze with Kufic Arabic inscriptions, an inlaid ceiling, eight figured consoles and inlaid shields decorated with elegant ornamental carvings. On the side and in the front, the bolsters resemble birds sitting on the branches. In style, the Chorku carved wood is close to the architectural details of the 10th-11th centuries found in the Upper Zeravshan. In the 19th century, the Langari Mohyen mazar appeared near Chorku, as a memorial place - kadamjo - the famous scientist-theologian of the early 13th century Imom Umar ibn Abdullaziz (Sadri Shahid). Modern Isfara and its environs are famous for their ceramists (kulolgars), skillful masters of artistic paintings on the ceilings of mosques, dwellings, and woodcarvers. The next city on our way is Kanibadam (almond city). In written sources, the city of Kanibadam or Kand is mentioned in the Sogdian documents found in the Upper Zeravshan castle on Mount Mug (712-714). In the 9th-10th centuries, Kanibadam was ranked among the Khujand district and was located at a distance of 5-6 farsakhs from it. Mirrajab-Dodkho madrasah (XVI-XVII CENTURIES), original in architecture and decoration, is located in the center of the city, now the Museum of History and Local Lore. The building of the madrasah, built of burnt bricks, is decorated with a solemn portal leading to a spacious courtyard, which is built up around the perimeter with 15 hujras and a summer mosque with multicolored ornamental painting of columns and ceiling. In the center of Kanibadam there is a minaret of the early 20th century with skillfully laid belts of figured brickwork, imitating the style of architecture of the 9th-10th centuries. In the northeastern outskirts of Kanibadam, there is the Oim madrasah (XVII-XVIII centuries),
